At the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, SDM College of Dental Sciences and Hospital (SDMCDSH), we are actively involved in the diagnosis and surgical management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)—a condition commonly marked by loud snoring and disturbed sleep due to airway obstruction. According to sleep studies, a normal Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) is less than 5. However, several patients treated in our department presented with severe OSA, with AHI values as high as 130. Such critically high indices can impair brain function and result in excessive daytime drowsiness, lethargy, poor concentration, increased risk of motor vehicle accidents (MVAs), stroke, and a significantly reduced quality of life.
Our department provides comprehensive treatment protocols aimed at correcting the anatomical causes of airway narrowing. We have successfully treated numerous OSA cases using both conventional orthognathic surgery and distraction osteogenesis to surgically reposition the jaws and enlarge the airway. Post-surgery, these patients demonstrated a remarkable reduction in AHI scores, often returning to normal levels—reflecting significant improvement in sleep quality, cognitive function, and overall wellbeing.
This initiative is led by Dr. Venkatesh Anehosur, Professor & Head of the Department, in collaboration with the Department of Orthodontics.
