Our Story
Early Years
SDM College of Dental Sciences & Hospital was founded in 1986 by the SDME Society, Ujire of which Sriman Dr.D.Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala is the President with a vision to train students to excel in knowledge, skills and service to the community. The mission of the institution was to improve oral health of the local population and to cater to their dental needs. It had a humble beginning with an intake of 40 students in the premises of SDM Engineering College Dharwad.
In 1987, a small dental hospital with 6 dental surgery chairs and units was commissioned in the town center at Dharwad. Two years later in 1989 the hospital was expanded to include all clinical departments and shifted to a larger building near the bus station. In the same year 10 acres land was acquired between Dharwad and Hubli on the National Highway to develop an independent campus with all required infra-structural facilities.
THE TRANSITIONAL YEARS
The year of 1991 remains a milestone in the history of the institution. Both the college and hospital were shifted to this monumental building exclusively designed for dental education and service. The college and hospital started functioning here with state of art equipments. By then the institution had established an excellent rapport with the community through its distinguished services. The Dental Council Of India recognized the BDS course offered by the institution in 1991. Inspired by this and to excel further postgraduate courses were started in 1992 in all the nine specialities of dentistry. The number of undergraduate admissions were raised to 100 in the same year.
YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT
Having established pride as a center of excellence for advanced learning, the institution had pro-actively decided to develop international academic linkage. As an out come of this lateral thinking, The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow recognized the institute as the only center in India for conducting Primary FDSRCPS examination in 1995. Later on, First Part of FRCS was added. Currently, the institution conducts Part A and B of MFDS, Membership Examination in Maxillofacial Surgery and Morth examination of the RCPS, Glasgow. In 1993, institution started the first Department of Oral Implantology in the Country with the support of Prof. Hans L. Grafelmann. The visit of Prof. P.I. Branemark to this institute in 1994 gave the much needed impetus to the practice of implantology in the Country. In-patient services in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery were started in 1992 with 20 beds and a single operating room.
